Week 5

What a busy week!  I guess by doing my blog on Sunday night, I can include this weekend as well!  Sooo last weekend, Darren had 4 hockey games and Trevor did not play at all… I missed 3 out of 4 of D’s games as I got to go to Bemidji, Minnesota to watch my niece play hockey instead! WHOOP WHOOP!! It was a flying trip, but when my sister-in-law asked me Wednesday night if I wanted to go and stay Friday night, I could say nothing but YES!!!  So away I went!  We left Friday morning at 8:00, stopped at Devils Lake for gas, McDonalds in Bemidji and then to the rink for game time at 3:07!
My ticket!

And what a rink!  The Bemidji State University sure knows how to do a rink up right!  I was impressed that the women’s team was treated very similar to the men’s team (not that I have been to a men’s game, but I imagine it’s the same).

The mascot was there, they introduced the first line-up, they even had “chuck the puck” and “closest puck to the beaver” during intermissions!  I was impressed!

The Bemidji Beaver

The girls fell 6 – 1 to the University of Wisconsin, who is ranked #1 in their league, but still, not too bad.  After that game, we waited for my niece, Missy, then headed out for supper and a tad bit of shopping.  On Saturday, we went for breakfast at a FANTASTIC restaurant called Minnesota Nice –

Missy and I at the restaurant

so amazing, then dropped Missy off so she could get ready for her game and we hit the shops again.  I didn’t buy much, but just nice to check out what’s there.  Game time again at 3:07, this time with better hockey!  They lost 4-2 but were able to score first as well as tie the game up at 2, so not terrible either!

Beaver Territory!

Then we left and headed for home!  Got home about 12:30 in the morning!  It was a fast trip, but well worth it!  My kids are mad that they didn’t get a chance to see Missy play, but maybe if their own hockey schedule wasn’t so stupid, they would!

How my kids can see her play! Pictures only!

I was able to watch Darren play with the Pee Wees on Sunday and they tied Souris!  Was a good game!  As for his other 3 games… I think they lost 2 and won 1… not sure… I was in Bemidji! Trevor had a game on Tuesday in Wawanesa and beat Parkland 6-0.  Considering they hadn’t been on the ice for a week, they did well.

So this weekend, Darren played Friday night (Feb 10) – I had to work the booth, so didn’t get to watch the game much, but they won!  Game 1 in league playoffs vs Carberry – success.  Game two coming this Tuesday… will see how that goes down!  He also played with the Pee Wees on Saturday, but we billeted him so I could also attend an information session on the MJHL… lucky me.  First off on Saturday, I traveled to Wawanesa to watch my nephew play hockey as well as my brother coach.  So different watching novice hockey now!  It was so much fun!

My "cool" nephew and I - had to bribe him to take a pic with me though!

After that, I headed back home just in time to jump in the truck and head to the info session in Deloraine.  Well… must say I did learn something… but I just wish it was further away from happening than it could be.  I still have a couple years to wait, but I am sure the time will come faster than I will be able to prepare myself for!  Then Game time at 6:00 vs Winnipeg Warriors – what a game! It was fast and rough but the Cougars pulled it off and won… well… in a shoot out!!  So exciting!  Today they played in Wawanesa and beat Eastman 6-4.  Another great game!  I was beginning to believe that Trevor would never score a goal when I was watching, but today he proved me wrong!  I was so happy to finally see it happen for myself!   So another weekend of hockey is over with one night off (for me) until 2 games Tuesday night!  I don’t think I will be able to make it to both games though…. School runs too late for me but I will make it to one at least!

Not hockey talk…
Wish I knew something different sometimes!  So this is actually not hockey… believe it or not!  So Thursday I received a call from the Hartney Principal desperately looking for a substitute teacher on Friday.  Of course I said yes, even knowing I would be the band teacher for the day… yes… band teacher.  Ok, so I did take band in high school, but … well… that was quite some time ago!  However, I think I pulled it off.  The kids were happy and they said they had fun.  I think it helped that I knew pretty much all of them, so I didn’t have any behaviour problems that were out of the ordinary for the classes!  The Principal did come and check on me once and asked if I had been having any problems and I told her nothing that I couldn’t handle, which was true!  When I asked Trevor if I embarrassed him in class, he told me that I was “sick” which apparently means awesome.  Darren told me that I wasn’t “sick” but that class was fun!  So if I didn’t wreck my own children in their school, I must have pulled it off ok.  Not sure if I EVER would want to be a band teacher, mostly as I had no clue what I was doing, but I wouldn’t turn down another sub day in there.  I think I am almost feeling back to normal now… like a school hangover… I was completely exhausted and my brain playing nasty band music at me all night, but I think I survived!

Tech talk
I had seen the Kahoot logo on Pinterest when I was searching for Evaluation and Assessment methods on Sunday night, so I was very pleased to actually see it in action on Monday!  I think it is definitely something that I would use in a classroom for older students.  I thought it was a fun way to use assessment for learning or even a tool to use to activate their learning before teaching a certain unit.  I would then use the same “test” after it was over to compare their learnings.
I also like using PIXLR to create our “Learning is…” image.  I think they all turned out fabulous!  I feel like there are so many little things that we need to remember and as I am using the computer for most of the class, I forget to write down all the tips and information that we need to do, in order to save the information to use in the future.
I think I found some better images than my stupid cats to use for the video that we need to make this week… at least I hope that they are good and it turns out ok!
TTFN!
